Anonymous asked: Do you know how an undergrad can get involved in research at SBU? Know anyone with experience? Please share. Thxx
Anonymous asked: When is it going to snow a lot? Like generally when did it snow last year? and will there be a lot of snow when we come back from break. Im not from long island so i don't really know the weather here.
It’ll snow occasionally but last year we just got major snow on the second weekend of February, which was Snowstorm Nemo.
Anonymous asked: Do you know if the busses will be running normally during finals week? Also, how do I get to Rockland hall? The bus system on campus is confusing.
They should run normally. Take the hospital bus or the express bus.
Since its so close to the holidays/finals, I thought I’d post this :)
You can get Amazon Student which is an Amazon Prime Free trial by signing up with your student email (,edu!). This gives you two day free shipping which is great for:
- Holiday gifts you forgot to get or don’t have time to go to the mall for
- Study snacks that are too expensive to get on campus
- That textbook you probably should have bought four months ago and now its finals and oops you need it now
I use this all the time and its fantastic. Just be aware that you can only use it for 6 months and then they’ll charge your account, but you can cancel before that and still get 6 months of free two day shipping. Plus its great because Amazon is changing free shipping from $25 minimum to $35 minimum.
So sign up here with your Stony Brook email and start procrastinating finals with online shopping :)
salvagedwood asked: I downgraded my meal plan a few days ago. Where will my reimbursement go? FSA said it will be put on my solar account but there is no money there. How can I resolve this?
Give them a couple days to process it. It’ll be under account summary/what do I owe as a credit, or you could also get a check in the mail.
Anonymous asked: When do we pay for spring semster?
I believe its January 15th.
Anonymous asked: I have federal work study so is it per semester? Also if i work and i haven't received all the money from it what happens to it?
Usually what shows up on SOLAR under financial aid is per semester. I would contact financial aid for what happens. It might be applied directly to your tuition but I don’t have work study so I don’t know, and the website is pretty vague.
Anonymous asked: Would it be stupid to apply for an on campus job now for next semester
Nope, I think its expected. If it starts next semester its actually better to apply now because they’ll have to set up training and interviews.
Anonymous asked: How much is the average rent for apartment near Stony?
It really depends. I’ve seen people trying to get $900 for a one person room. Apartments are more expensive than room shares. I have an apartment now and I currently pay $500. As long as you pay under $675 its worth it to live off campus though. Be careful of potential illegal apartments. You’re more likely going to be able to find an apartment with multiple rooms to split with other people though.
Anonymous asked: is it difficult to make it to the Dean's List at Stony? What does the dean look for in order to place a student's name on the list? thank you
It actually doesn’t really have anything to do with a Dean picking people at all, you just need the gpa as follows: seniors, 3.40; juniors, 3.30; sophomores, 3.20; and freshmen, 3.10
Anonymous asked: How do I downgrade my meal plan? I have a lot of money left but the semester is almost over....
Anonymous asked: How can i calculate my fees for next semester like how are classes counted towards how much you have to pay?
Basically it should be the same thing as this semester unless they increase anything. After 12 credits you pay the same amount until you hit really high like 23. I’d link you but I’m on the bus so I’ll do it when I get to a computer later today.
Anonymous asked: what is the grading system like in sbu?
That’s a really vague question. Professors give you A’s, B’s, C’s, but those translate to numerical values on your transcript, and each Professors version of an A can vary (for example A could be 96-100 or 70-100)
Anonymous asked: So I don't have to live on campus even if I'm an out of state student and want to live in an apartment off campus?
Nope, you just need to make sure you find a place off campus.
Anonymous asked: Do you have to live on campus your freshman year?
Nope, you can commute.
