Closing Blog

After much consideration, I’ve decided to defer future questions to the new official “askstonybrook” tumblr that is run by admissions. I do run both, but I feel it is better to have an official university account that can also be transferred when I graduate. Please refer any future questions to that account, as I will answer them from there for the duration of my internship, after which it is possible someone else may take over that is not me. If all goes well I’ll still be running that one for 3 years if I get into Grad School here but who knows at this point. Its also a lot more organized to just answer questions on one account, and the way I set up the new one is more organized as well.

TL;DR: Shutting down this tumblr, please refer to this tumblr here: askstonybrook

Anonymous asked: I know you haven't done room selection in a while, but after I selected my friend as a proxy it wouldn't let me go past step 8 when applying for housing and I know I have to do all 10 steps to be guaranteed housing. Do you know why? Or who I should call to ask?

It might not be time for you to register, so that might be why. Otherwise I’d call campus residences here.

Anonymous asked: What does "check for double room" mean?

Ask your RA, I’m a commuter and its been 2 years since I did room selection.

Anonymous asked: What dorms are the best?

None of them are the best. Its whatever you make of them.

Anonymous asked: how good of a school is stony brook?

Stony Brook is an amazing school. Its one of the top SUNY’s, has a relationship with the Brookhaven National Lab, and is highly competitive.

Anonymous asked: Where is the best place for commuters to study during the day?

I like the upstairs in the union or I just go home mid day. There’s also the two commuter lounges, the sky lounge in the SAC, the stacks in the library. Personal preference really.

Anonymous asked: How many people come from states other than NY? And what states do they come from?

A lot. We’ve had people from every state (besides Wisconsin I think). There’s usually a large concentration of people from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, and other states close to NY.

Anonymous asked: I'm interested in working at the bookstore but does the hiring process go through the same application found on the FSA website? thank you!

They’re barnes and noble, but my boyfriend works there and they said they hire through zebra net (but they’re not hiring right now).

Anonymous asked: i'm currently a freshman living in roosevelt quad. i want to get into yang next year do you know if there is any chance? what if i want to get into roth or kelly? it is possible? also, if i know someone is moving out of their dorm can i request that specific dorm or is that not possible? thanks!!

There’s no real statistics for this kind of thing. Sometimes more people want a dorm, sometimes less. Its a lot of luck.

Anonymous asked: what do you do in first year seminar and is it a lot of work? its only 1 credit...

Its not a lot of work. Its mostly learning about Stony Brook and making sure you get involved (and don’t just stay in your dorm all the time).

Anonymous asked: Will it be hard to join a 6 person suite in Roth next semester? I am a freshman in Kelly but will have U3 standing next semester. Do I have a higher chance of a friend in Roth listing me as a suitemate or me joining Roth myself?

It depends on your date and time to register now. If that friend already lives in Roth they can still get displaced. Its really a matter of luck.

Anonymous asked: when's registration for the fall start?

March 31st for U4

Anonymous asked: I'm finding it increasingly difficult to meet with my major ( ENS) adviser. He always stands me up when I schedule an appointment. What should I do? Also who can i speak to about choosing summer classes?

Complain to the department head.

Summer classes you’d need to speak to your advisor (unless you know what you want/need to take). Its always recommended that you talk to your advisor but I usually know what I need to take so I just register for it.

Anonymous asked: Did administration start sending out financial aid information yet?

Mid to Late March.
